The marketing of Kool and Newport brand menthol cigarettes to Black people began gaining ground in the 1950s, and included focused advertising and corporate sponsorships of events popular in Black communities, such as jazz concerts
Additionally, the menthol market is being scrutinized more closely by regulatory authorities, and therefore it may be more difficult to grow than previously expected
But any bar, casino, rental car, or indoor space that welcomed smokers in the past could still have ample amounts of thirdhand smoke
This would substantively reduce childrens incidental exposure to tobacco products at convenience stores and gas stations, and adolescents access to them, without increasing incentives to choose more lethal combustible products over non-combustible options like e-cigarettes.
